How Pravum Can Assist

Three levels of engagement — each designed for a different stage of a criminal matter. The scope, process, and fee structure for each are set out clearly before any commitment is made.

Initial criminal matter consultation

First-Hour Criminal Matter Consultation

A private initial session for individuals who have been notified of an investigation, received a summons, or are dealing with the early stages of a matter. You receive clear procedural information, a candid assessment, and a written summary of practical next steps.

  • Private one-hour session
  • Written action summary provided
  • No commitment to further engagement required
Magistrate court representation

Magistrate Court Representation

Full representation for matters at the magistrate court level. The engagement covers case review, written representations to the prosecution, attendance at mention dates, and conduct of trial or plea proceedings. Communication is regular and plain throughout.

  • Detailed case file review
  • All mention dates attended
  • Trial or plea proceedings conducted
Sessions court defence representation

Sessions Court Defence & Representation

A fuller engagement for more serious charges at sessions court level. Full case preparation includes review of investigation papers, witness analysis, defence theory, submissions, and trial conduct. Sentencing mitigation receives the same attention as the substantive defence.

  • Full investigation papers review
  • Defence theory and submissions prepared
  • Sentencing mitigation included

A Measured Approach to Criminal Defence

Grounded in Malaysian Criminal Procedure

The team operates within the Criminal Procedure Code and the Penal Code as they apply in Malaysia, without shortcuts or general impressions borrowed from other jurisdictions.

Clear Scope Before Commitment

Each engagement sets out what is covered, what it costs, and at what points the matter would be re-evaluated. No open-ended retainers without agreed parameters.

Regular, Plain Communication

Clients are told what is happening and what comes next. Updates are provided after each significant step — hearings, prosecutorial decisions, and procedural developments.

Senior Counsel Coordination

Where the matter calls for it, Pravum coordinates with experienced senior counsel. This happens as part of the engagement, not as an afterthought once proceedings are underway.

Strict Privilege and Confidentiality

All communications between client and counsel are protected by legal professional privilege. What you share stays within the engagement, governed by the applicable rules of the Bar.

Where Does Your Matter Stand?

If you have received a police summons, been asked to present yourself for an interview, or are already partway into proceedings, a short consultation can help clarify what you are facing and what the realistic options are. There is no obligation to proceed further.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have been asked to attend a police interview. Should I speak to a lawyer first?
In most circumstances, yes. Before attending any formal or informal interview under the Criminal Procedure Code, understanding what the investigation concerns and what your rights are in that setting can make a material difference to how the matter proceeds. A first-hour consultation is designed precisely for this situation.
What is the difference between the magistrate court and the sessions court in Malaysia?
The magistrate court handles less serious offences with lower maximum penalties. The sessions court handles more serious charges — including those with longer custodial sentences — and its procedural requirements are correspondingly more involved. Which court hears your matter depends on the offence charged, and this affects how the defence is structured and resourced.
How long does a criminal matter typically take from charge to conclusion?
Timelines vary considerably depending on the court, the complexity of the charge, the number of witnesses, and how the prosecution proceeds. Magistrate matters can sometimes be resolved within several months; sessions court proceedings can extend to a year or longer. At the initial consultation, Pravum will give a realistic picture of what to expect in your specific situation.
What happens if I cannot attend all court dates?
Court attendance requirements depend on the nature of the hearing. Mention dates and procedural hearings may proceed with counsel attending on your behalf; substantive hearings typically require your presence. Your counsel will explain each date to you in advance so there are no surprises about when your attendance is required.
Is the initial consultation confidential?
Yes. From the moment the consultation begins, the conversation is protected by legal professional privilege. Pravum will not disclose what you share without your authority, subject only to the limited exceptions recognised under Malaysian law.
What does the sessions court engagement fee cover?
The RM 2,200 engagement covers full case preparation — review of investigation papers, witness analysis, defence theory formulation, preparation of written submissions, and conduct of the trial. Sentencing mitigation is included. Any disbursements (filing fees, transcript costs) are set out separately in the engagement letter.
